Located in the northwestern part of Indonesia, Singkawang is a vibrant coastal city celebrated for its rich multicultural heritage, scenic beaches, and unique traditions. Often called the “City of a Thousand Temples”, Singkawang is a cultural melting pot where Hakka and Teochew Chinese communities, alongside Dayak and Malay populations, have coexisted for generations, creating a rich tapestry of customs, cuisine, and festivals.

The city’s Chinese cultural influence is particularly strong due to the Hakka and Teochew communities. Their traditions are visible in the architecture of temples, the layout of neighborhoods, and the celebration of festivals. Singkawang is especially renowned for the annual Cap Go Meh festival, where the Hakka and Teochew cultural heritage shines through dragon parades, lion dances, and traditional rituals. This festival is among the largest of its kind in Indonesia, drawing visitors from across the archipelago.

In addition to its cultural vibrancy, Singkawang boasts stunning coastal landscapes. Its pristine beaches, such as Pantai Pasir Panjang, Pantai Samudra Indah, and Pantai Tanjung Bajau, feature long stretches of white sand, gentle slopes, and scenic sunset views, making them perfect for relaxation and photography. The city also preserves its cultural heritage through sites like the Tjhia Family Heritage House and creative initiatives such as the Street Gallery murals, which depict Singkawang’s history and traditions.

Singkawang’s strategic location along the South China Sea has fostered trade and multicultural interaction while allowing it to maintain a unique traditional charm. Visitors can experience a harmonious blend of Hakka, Teochew, Dayak, and Malay influences in architecture, festivals, and cuisine.

Singkawang is a rare destination where visitors can immerse themselves in authentic Chinese-Indonesian culture, enjoy stunning seaside landscapes, and explore a city that embraces its multicultural roots.
