(The Holy House of Mercy of Macau (Portuguese: Santa Casa da Misericórdia) is one of the most historically significant landmarks located at Senado Square in Macau. Established in 1569 under the orders of Belchior Carneiro Leitão, this institution was founded as a branch of the renowned Portuguese charitable organization, Santa Casa da Misericórdia.

Originally serving as a medical clinic, the building played a vital role in providing healthcare and social support during the early development of Macau. Over time, its functions expanded to include various welfare services, notably operating as an orphanage and a refuge for widows of sailors who had perished at sea. This reflects the strong humanitarian spirit and community care that defined Macau’s colonial era.

Today, the Holy House of Mercy stands as an enduring symbol of compassion and social service, as well as a fine example of colonial architecture. It forms an integral part of the Historic Centre of Macau, which has been recognized by UNESCO for its unique blend of Eastern and Western cultural influences. Visitors can admire its elegant façade and explore its historical significance while discovering the rich heritage of Macau.
