The Saigon Central Post Office situated in the historic Paris Commune Square in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the city’s most beautifully preserved colonial landmarks. Located adjacent to the iconic Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, it forms part of a striking architectural ensemble in the city center.

Constructed between 1886 and 1891 during the era of French Indochina, the post office reflects a harmonious blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and French architectural influences. The building stands as a testament to the European design legacy introduced to Vietnam in the late 19th century.

The exterior façade features elegant arched windows, intricate detailing, and classic colonial symmetry. On its outer walls, visitors will find commemorative plaques honoring renowned scientists and engineers who contributed to the advancement of communication technologies. Among them are Samuel Morse, André-Marie Ampère, Alessandro Volta, Georg Ohm, and Michael Faraday.

Inside, the post office impresses with its grand vaulted ceilings, vintage telephone booths, and a spacious interior hall that echoes the charm of a bygone era. A standout feature is the pair of historic painted maps displayed within the building. One of the most notable is titled “Lignes télégraphiques du Sud Vietnam et Cambodge 1892”, illustrating the telegraph network of southern Vietnam and Cambodia shortly after the building’s completion.

Today, the Saigon Central Post Office remains a fully operational post office while also serving as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can send postcards, admire the historic architecture, and experience a unique blend of functionality and heritage.

As one of Ho Chi Minh City’s must-visit landmarks, it offers travelers a glimpse into the city’s colonial past and the evolution of communication in Vietnam.
